And then, after their 2nd round, wham! suddenly all the magic evaporates and the story gets flat, implausible and conventional.

Kim knew Lyle was her bestie's husband, she still power-seduced him and had great sex as a result. Why break what you just got going now? To somehow force the storyline back into mainstream 'monogamic is the only way' convention, that's why.
