Polite North Americans "go to the bathroom", so if one of us is a guest in your house, and they ask where the bathroom is, they want the toilet. The phrase can also mean the act itself, as in "Johnny went to the bathroom in his pants" (wet himself, or whatever). "Pee" is a little more daring; it's seen as graphic but not actually vulgar.

But for me the most mysterious thing was the beetle drive! Fortunately, Wikipedia has a good explanation. The closest American analogue I can think of is bingo. Our version differs in details, but most importantly it's much more of a social event than serious gambling.
