thoughtful
compelling as usual for you, I would offer that erotica almost always explores the thoughts of the charactars rather only describing physical events
OK but
way too much about you, too little about writing. Examples would have been good to illustrate your points. .
I thought it rambled on being cute and charming, when 'how to' was what drew the writer in.
As one who needs to write better, I can only say it didn't help me.
Interesting
Always willing to learn ...with a good teacher
Summation
No beginning writer ever suffered by taking a course in storytelling techniques from an established writer. There are traditionally accepted rules for writing fiction and, by learning those rules, one can then decide knowledgeably when to follow them and when to break or ignore them.
What a good writing teacher, whose opinion the beginning writer trusts, can teach about writing, in addition to techniques, is how to develop a good self-critical ability by a 'close reading' of the generally acclaimed writing of others. There is a difference between reading for pleasure and reading to see how an author achieved his or her effects, which one can then experiment with in his or her own work.
Holy Cow!!
What set you off? :) 2 how to's in just a few days!
Anyway, I do agree with you. An erotic story is much more stimulating--at least to this male--than porn. I totally agree with rascal, but I also am chastising myself for not voting & commenting on more stories.
Anyway, I do like your stories and will continue to read the ones that look interesting. I will also try to remember to comment and vote.
I Disagree!
I have corresponded with you a little...and I don't think you are a lady to tangle with. (Sorry - 'with whom to tangle'!)...but I beg to disagree. I have a son who was born to drive...whatever he gets into or on to he will make it purr. You, lady were born to write..OK..you may have to practice...but, hey..it will make 1% difference. You write because it's YOU, and we/I love it....
good story
You have told correctly about erotica and pornography and it is a need also.
Enlightening and instructive
But I'm not at all sure I can recognize that line between pornography and erotica
But I am positive that this lady writes the best Literotica has to offer and fortunately she is also one of the most prolific of authors.
Loved your essay
Your amazing Susan Jill Parker!
So many writers here need to read this. If they did they just might get us to read their stories.
For me the difference between erotica and porn is like the difference between main stream lesbian porn movies and real lesbian porn movies. Real lesbian porn doesn't even have to have sex scenes to be sexually stimulating. I suppose it's really lesbian erotica movies.
You are so right!
I like how you describe how you right an erotic story. I would say I tend to right more pornographically, but the initial concept you introduced is the same. I write as it flows from my brain.
Could have also been titled how to read erotica.
I think this and the following comments should be a required read before anyone is allowed to comment on Literotica. It also inspired me to go back and make amends for a earlier comment on Rachel 10. I also dually noted the comment by josephstevens and that might have contributed to my inspiration. Hopefully after my contrition I will be left with a pair still hanging.
nice
Nice stuff. And, it feels good to be one of the ten thousand!
An Enlightenment
Susan takes you by the hand and leads you through the birth of an idea and how to
bring it to fruition in print. Thank You for the insight.
LIT-PORNO
This "how to" essay is a good read in spite of the fact SJP gets a little carried away in repetition. I have been writing fiction for decades but unfortunately very little of it has been published. Over the years I have arrived at many of the points made here. Writing to me is like having a conversation with the perfect listener. By extension, writing erotica is like flirting with (in my case) a beautiful and sexy lady; whereas writing pornography is like telling the same sexy lady a truly filthy joke. In the first case I am trying to excite as well as amuse the lady so that she becomes receptive of further conversation. In the second case I am trying to shock the lady and encourage her to walk away. I loved the analogy of the Bentley and the blonde. Great example of how the erotic is in the details, not the sex. Thank you for all your stories. I have rated all those I read. I commented on just a few. Just lazy, I guess. Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS.
Thank you
Damn thank you for.... One showing me that I am a writer two for putting a smile on my face and three for giving me a idea for the story I am currently attempting but damn now I feel sad because there's no article that tells me how to describe sex I've got tons of stories and I finally attempt one but I can't get the sex
Help
What a gift
I found this essay to be inspired and inspiring. Thank you.
Good Thoughts
After years writing densely technical non-fiction as an engineer, I have started writing fiction. Two story lines popped out immediately and pretty much wrote themselves as you describe, but my third just withered on the vine and the fourth is wandering after a strong start. I tend to want to power through the story and make it happen but then it seems to lack something. Sounds like practice is the key. Your comments on editing are spot on. I don't like to do it, but it needs to be done. The comments I got on my stories were from the editing types who blasted every real or imagines mistake. The second time I used one of the volunteer editors and he/she helped a lot. Thanks for your essay. It validated some of my thoughts and offered some points for consideration.
I LIKED IT
I fell in love, or was it lust, with your stories from the first. You are a great writer. Thanks for sharing your ideas about porn vs erotica. When I try to write erotica, I sometimes find the line of separation becomes fuzzy. Your comments about showing vs telling should help. Thanks for taking the time to write this story.
Holy Hannah!
SJP.
The biggest impression I got from reading your piece on Erotica vs. Porn was: one hell of an intelligent person. While, IMHO, you can be wordy, you seem to be plugged in to the central processing of human perception. If aliens (benevolent) landed on Earth and wanted to know how humans think, perceive, feel, hope, react, communicate, I'd give them some of your stories.
You are exactly what you intend to be and what you say you are.
Thanks for your gifts and for sharing them.

A Required Read
This woman has amazing writing craftsmanship and intellect. This essay should be required reading for creative literature classes . . . there's a great deal of thought here, and how much more enjoyable the discussions would have been !
Valuable Advice
I just started writing erotic fiction myself, and this brief tutorial has been a huge help. It's nice to know that erotica and pornography are different things. I'm a devotee of the former.
