The first sentence sets the tone for colloquial, but "pretty pass" is an idiomatic expression that, I don't think, is very familiar to most, so the first line felt a little like trying to mix oil and water together, at least to me. That said, I love the second line. It prompted me to take it further to "toil and trouble."
