Great flash story, But why spell tires with a "y?"

tyres go on a vehicle's wheels, and 'tires' means something totally different.
All together, now ...
... 'Neighbours - everybody needs good neighbours ...' A nice story - and the right (UK English) spelling of tyres. This constant carping about UK vs US spellings really tires me - or is that 'tyres' me? You've got me all confused now ;) !
