but coffee was almost unheard of in the UK in wartime... certainly not available to schoolteachers. Trust me, I know. My mother, aunts and grandparents lived through the London blitz.

She could have been offering him CAMP coffee...the liquid coffee which was available most of the time - especially by '44... It had an "okay" taste, but we'd wait for many years to get real stuff..!!

Definitely seems like the first chapter of a story involving not just our hero and Becky but also Vickie at some later point. What happened to the rest of the story?
