Interesting ... could have told a little more
I actually gave this a 5 rating because it is interesting. I was wondering about some of the details, though ... Saint Valentine is mentioned and then dropped like a rock. What DID he do for the church? I also wondered about Ham castrating Noah. It's sure not in the King James Version of the Bible, but then again KJ the man had enough problems with the church as it was. No damn wonder you heard about black Africans (not Arab Africans -- I wonder why nobody makes the distinction between them) being called the "children of Ham" every once in a while when people were justifying slavery and racism. Some of the "religious practices" you mentioned were el barfo -- now I know why many churches, especially Protestant ones, come down so hard on gay sex, because it's the most visible of the non-traditional sex acts. And I had to stifle a laugh when I thought about the old Catholic tradition of eating fish on Friday instead of beef. Supposedly it's so you won't insult Christ by eating the equivalent of His flesh on the day of the week He was crucified (if I'm hearing this wrong, please let me know), but it takes on a whole different meaning. All in all, this is enlightening, but kind of grotesque (even if you're reading it for informational purposes), and leaves various things hanging.
P.S. The Epic of Gilgamesh describes a flood quite similar to Noah's -- it even goes to lengths to describe the boat the way people envision it (the Bible doesn't say the Ark was shaped like any conventional boat). Did you get the story of bad little Ham from that?
Available on Line
The story of the castration of Noah may be found on line with a search engine. It comes from a Midrash in "Hebrew Myths" translated and commented on by Robert Graves and Raphael Patai. I have seen many portions of this book on line. Likewise one could find with a search engine Valentius (110-175 AD). He claimed to have the secret writings of Paul. He taught a combination of pagan Gnosticism with Christianity. He was extremely popular and was almost selected as bishop of Rome (Pope).
holy crap...literally!
i wish you would have quoted more sources. i thought this was awesome! but i'd love to see where you got it, and do some follow up on my own. thanks for sharing this!
... Now I undersant the obsession with MLA or APA
Make sure to back your claims with evidence, please. I study the word often .... i think the reason for the "glossing" over as you put it, is to keep the mind from wandering where it always loves wallowing --the gutter. :) I know ..Ive been there. I"ve been reading the Word since I was a little kid. I always got a hard-on when reading the law and He's talking about all the sexual connections that werent allowed. I couldnt help but see them going on in my head and thus the boner.
Now, imagine if he would have just put it outthere with crude details! we'd all just miss the point, as you obviously have :)
And please, dont confuse strange practices of Catholics with the actual Followers of Christ. They arent the same. First point, they dont follow Christ, they venerate and honor him, they think -- but when trouble strikes they pray to the Virgin ... and what ever the Pope says Goes ... Why bother with Christ? ... that is the catholic way.
As for the fish symbol ... its origin actually has nothing to do with Venus --since early christians were greeks not romans ..and if they were into pagan rituals, it would have been arthemis and aphrodite ... the fish comes from the confluence of odd coinsidence .... jesus in greek has some similarities to the word fish AND he spoke of making his disciples fishers of men ... the symbol was to represent the person ... a man/woman who was "fished" or caught by one of these "fisherman" ...
Now here's an interesting twist to investigate ... One of the earliest accusation against Christians what that they were claiming to live forever by eating the flesh and drinking the blood of some man --- sound familiar? eternal life from consuming blood?? :D
anyway ... have fun .. i kind of enjoyed the article ... but there were areas where you just went out on left field without much to go on ...
and like you ... i dont feel like backing my statements up with much facts ;)
