I really enjoyed the ....

payback that Austen gave Arlene and Traylor, however I'm really curious what they were going to say to Austen when they were at the house that they thought would change his mind!!!

Good One - read it again!

Jail time is better than the traditional punishment for adultery: Stoning. What is interesting is that stoning was and is a punishment for cheating in countries that do not traditionally give the store away to the wife in a divorce - like they do in the west. As a western man, I am disheartened and ashamed to live in a society that not only favors women in divorce proceedings but also does not care about adultery on the part of the wife or the husband. While perhaps stoning is a little too much for our delicate western stomachs, certainly the effect of that betrayal is the same the world around! Why then should cheaters be rewarded with a free pass by society? Their cheating not only harms their own families, it harms all of us! If they cannot be loyal to their spouse, how can the rest of us ever trust them? They took an oath to be faithful to their spouse in front of God, family and friends - what do they owe the rest of us? No, these are shitty people and their character deserves to be public information to protect the rest of us. Also, as people of low character, they should not be allowed close contact with young children, they are a bad influence. This is all common sense.

Superb

Superb, simply superb. One of the best stories that I've ever read in this genre.

Second read

He's just not that into her.

That is the conclusion I had to reach. Little emotion. The first time he got even a little suspicious, he essentially bailed and set out to destroy both people. THE. FIRST. TIME. So this sort of elaborate plan...it takes time. It takes thinking. Niggling details. He's had this 'exit' strategy planned for a while.

And this is why it breaks my suspension of disbelief (I am okay with that if I treat the story as a guilty pleasure, not a serious attempt at a story). Too much too fast.

Yes, she wandered off to fuck someone else. Yes, she was a controlling shrew (SHE had the keys and he didn't? We know who wears the pants in this family) BUT as soon as things started to slaloming out of control, she tried to 'fix' and 'explain' things. Would it have been a good explanation? We will never know.

He refused, REFUSED to let her try to fix anything or explain anything. There was obviously some kind of unknown elements here...and he decided to go off in an uninformed fashion.

So I didn't like him very much. His extreme form of revenge, while my inner male is fist pumping, my rational brain is...diffident.

Way to Harsh

Sorry, but this was way out of proportion to her adultery. In fact it was mean and selfish and cruel. Jail time and disbarment ruin her entire life. If he had divorced her with proof of her adultery, he could have gotten good terms on custody. Saying he wanted full custody leaves the kids with a father who destroyed their mother and proved capable of perjury, cold-blooded revenge, and hatred. All of the BTB people, if you think this was OK, you are just as nuts as you often are.

Over the top

I agree with Clemons. Way too harsh of a revenge. Yes, she did commit adultery. No, they didn't commit theft or insurance fraud. Gave it a one star.

Juat a Story

Just a story but with a lot of realism, previous commentators write of his harshness that his revenge was disproportionate to her adultery, I agree but adultery is not the only issue here, she threatened him, in the case of divorce he would haft to leave his home probably make mortgage payments, alimony, child support and seeing his children only at weekends maybe in some grotty little apartment because he would not be able to afford anything better, how is that for being harsh!, it was blackmail. If someone was about to shoot you would you not try and shoot them first sometimes in life you have to fight fire with fire. Divorce law in the U.S. and U.K. is woefully inadequate.

I can read this story over and over. The wife should have never cheated. She got what she deserved.

fifteen16 is dead on

It is not just a matter of hurt feelings. It is a matter of having your kids taken from you, financial destruction and social alienation. She chose to destroy her marriage, he chose to do what he could to save himself. It is a story about survival and protecting the children. What kind of person is she to be around kids? She is a greedy, selfish, slut - she is not wife or mother material. Typical lawyer, they always think they are the smartest people in the room. Oops!

Funny How People Complain It's Too Harsh

I can't see that at all. She had the chance to walk away mostly unhurt and she didn't take it. She wanted to keep everything she had and cheat on the side too. He just wanted her out of his life and to hang on to the things that mattered to him like his family and his home. When she wouldn't walk away peacefully, she got what she deserved.

Absolutely perfect, confirmed!

I agree totally with SouthernmAn69's comment.
The only possibility for Austen to avoid the cheating Arlene from getting the kids, the house and other benefits in a divorce, as she promised to do, was to have her go to jail.
Having put in jail her lover too, was the best possible success!

A well worked out scam, sort of.

The husband is the criminal. Planting false evidence, interfering with a police investigations are just two I can think of off hand. They would put in jail for longer than what his wife got.

He put two people in jail and ruined his wife's earning power in her chosen profession for ever. All because she cheated? I know we all would want revenge for a cheating spouse, but this is a little excessive and puts hubby in a bad position morally. It sounds like hubby is seriously lacking in self confidence and trying to compensate for his lack of performance which caused his wife to find sex with someone who could satisfy her. In any case he didn't even try to find out why.

They split their assets 50/50 anyway, and he was willing to let her have unlimited visitation, so why the big charade. Just divorce her, man up and beat the guy up himself. I say he's a wimp.

As for the story it was fairly well written and kept my interest all the way through. I don't know where it's going, so I'll read the next one. I wonder if the actress and bus boy will find out about the divorce and trial and start blackmailing him. If the cops find out he's in for a lot more jail time than the wife got.

I AM curious just what explanation she could have possibly had that she thought could have got her out of her cheating.

good story

I had a feeling he set her up, couldn't stop reading till the end. talk about a quick thinker, or thinking on your feet. Enlist this guy, set him up in our defense dept., we sure could use him. Who thinks that clearly while in an emotional imbalance?

Yeah

Ye reap what ye show. What was different between her cheating and him setting her up? No difference. Both were deceptions. His was just more thought out. Besides, cheaters belong in jail anyway. Fuck 'em.

I can't believe some people

I can't believe that Austen couldn't spend the time to just talk with Arlene. I also can't believe that Austen would frame Arlene.

Punishment too extreme

Setting someone up for prison time for a crime they didn't commit, is a lot worse than adultery. Gave two stars for that reason.

I'm with mcbs...

As reprehensible as Arlene's cheating and deceptions were, ruining her life via having her dis-barred--depriving her of future income and comfort--and sent to prison--depriving her of her human right to free exercise of her will and her life--was magnitudes more immoral and unethical than her actions. Not to mention depriving her of contact with her own children. THE FUCK?!!!

Austen is a degenerate sociopath, and is not fit to be in the presence of, and father to, his own children. Spouses, women AND men (just to remind the rapidly misogynist men here at Lit, men comprise the vast majority of adulterers/cheaters), do commit the act of infidelity all the time. Divorces happen, and both parties go on with their lives, and the children still have two parents (though perhaps a few years of therapy ahead of them, due to issues associated with the circumstances of the divorce, and the sometimes inevitable poison whispered in their ears by one or both of the parents).

It is fucking disturbing to read the glee associated with those who found Austen's actions acceptable. You all need the prompt aid of a mental health professional.

Jeebus fuck...

It's Just a Story, Folks!

Great read, sir! I do see some holes in the logic of the husband scorned, but what the heck, it's fiction! Thank you for sharing your work, and I look forward to reading much more.

A great story

Until the explanation of his illegal and preposterous setup of his wife. And the holes in it were ridiculous.

As pointed out, it is fiction. But lets be make it reasonable and believable.

One Fantastic Story

Okay. It is a little farfetched and there are several flaws, but as a story of fiction, it is an excellent story. 5-Stars. It is a favorite story of mine.

A big weakness of his plan is the people he hired, if I were him I would be sweating bullets that either they let something slip, had an attack of conscience, or were simply unwilling to take the risk of being co-conspirators to putting two people to jail for a crime they didn't commit, and risk facing conspiracy charges.

Looks to me like

when he wanted to talk about it and asked her not to cheat she then threatened him with divorce and loss of his children and his accumulated wealth. Seems she did it at least one more time and all the while refusing to talk to him about what was going on. If there was ever a reason to go nuclear on a spouse that was it. All he did was set it up to where she couldn't touch anything they had in the divorce. I mean, she was a lawyer and did know how to fuck him over and had the contacts to get it done. And to make matters worse she never once said she was sorry about the affair or the threats. Let the games begin.
