Good advice

I'd also suggest that you keep away from candles to reduce any fire risk and use torches instead which means keeping a few batteries in stock. These can also be used to power a simple radio to keep up to date with any local news reports and help to reduce boredome.

Emergency lighting

Candles are romantic, but can be dangerous especially for elderly and small kids. Get a set of solar yard lights. They have no flames and don't need batteries. Charge them in the sun as the storm is on its way and recharge daily when power remains out. Most come with separate ground stakes. If you leave the stake off, they sit just fine on the counter and can be carried around by all family members.

Keep generators outside and way from open doors/windows. Carbon monoxide kills.
