I'm assuming this couple was youngish - say 30? In order to live the rest of their lives off of $900K, they are going to have to live a fairly meager existence for the next 40 or 50 years...

They should look into some good investments with high yield and reinvest those. One million or less is not the huge amount it used to be. You have to work the system for it to sustain you. Cute story though.
