This story really doesn't work as a vignette because there isn't any resolution to the situation you presented. What you have is good, you just need more of it.

That guy turned into a jerk. He should be punished by losing his long time friend until he realizes what he's done. His friend obviously loves him as all the best friends do. He was given a gift out of desperation and concern. To just spit on it by degrading his friend is just cruel. Sam doesn't deserve the friendship he's been blessed with all his life.

He's just disappointing.
