The whole piece comes across to me as an adults reflection on childhood naivety and that and wanting to believe, as if lady liberty is Santa or some thing, there is resignation and An "it is what it is" attitude in this piece for me. it he end speaks a little of hope but it seems like a final grasp before wading back into obscurity.
