It takes him a few seconds to realise as he's in a sleepy state. You know that feeling you get sometimes when you wake up and you forget where you are for a moment? He's not really taking in what he sees, but then after a few seconds it clicks and that's when he wakes up.
Anyway, the focus of this story isn't on realism as you've noticed. It's just a bit of fun. If it's not to your taste that's fine, as I'm sure there are thousands of more realistic and more serious stories for you to read! :)
