I
Her eyes closed tight against the day
But I can see through her fear
And I wait until she sees
There can be no love without risk
No tears without the joy
Of loving and being loved
The distance in between
But a breath
Another night of bliss
Darkness brings the quiet stars
To rest upon her lips

II
She sleeps while I await
I watch and listen, her sigh a revelation
I hold my breath
The smile so slight across her lips
A kiss not yet to be
A dream flutters beneath the skin
I breathe easy knowing
There is love in her closed eyes
And peace has found me waiting still

I can easily conjure the scene you are describing here. To be present in a moment like that is a memory one will never forget.

slumber

The beauty of watching a loved one slumber peacefully as you await her awakening.
