splitting the air.



her body stiffens,

     her muscles taut,

     her breath caught,

     eyes wide yet blind,

     hands clenched around chain,

     heart thundering,

     mind gripped with fear,

     skin covered with sweat,

awaiting the painful lash...



The piercing scream is not hers.
