I've never had a love like this,

It consumes my soul; I'm just his obsession.

I've never known a love like this,

Roiling with such emotion.

I've never known the love of a man,

Who shows it to me through his hands.

A man who says he loves me,

Even as he strikes me.

And as I lay there tarnished.

One thought flits through my skull,

God never meant for him to hurt me,

But still I must protect my self.

And as my love holds me tightly,

He cries and says he's sorry.

He says he never meant to hurt me,

He says it will never happen ever again.

He tells me lies that I can't believe.

And he knows he's lying too.

We both know I don't mean it when I say,

"I'm fucking leaving you."

But tonight was different because I've had enough.

I took the gun from his side of the bed,

I aimed it for his head.

And before he landed one last punch,

I shot my lover and now he's dead.

I liked it! Stark emotion about a tough subject. The ending was a bit of a surprise as I'm sure it was meant to be. The only thing I see that seems out of place is the sudden use of rhymes at the end. They seem a bit forced and give the ending a kind of nursery rhyme effect which seems strange in a poem about violence.
