Standing straight with bottom buried
In just enough creamy cake
To keep its balance and its stance
Waxy proud and tall

Colour pink but not just any pink
A pink that calls memories
Of carousels and birthday ribbons
Looped round and bouncy free

Bought with thought by someone
Who knew to not pick blue or even yellow
But pink for her and on her day
So special she must be

A wick so white yet ready to be blackened
By a flame that burns and flickers
Melting tiny beads of waxen tears
Kissing candle tender as they fall

Wishes made and wishes sent
Upon the flame and blown with breath
That holds the whispers soft and warm
And keeps the secrets safe

It stands alone, this candle straight
But lonely not for as it stands
It knows the wish the man has made
And feels the love therein

Surrounded by and covered in the richness
Of the cake and knowing that if just for now
It got to feel and taste and hear
And be a candle pink and just for her

He and she both know and that’s enough
For candle who has stood and burned
And gave its all to him who sat and wished
His wish and gave his love to her
