Spine straight, shoulders square,
sitting absolutely stationary and as
quiet as a growing chrysalis.

To feel the velvety imprints
of the caterpillar’s tiny feet
creeping slowly up your back.

Each fuzzy, slippered instep,
every single silken impression
ascending toward the heavens.

The journey is almost complete.
The pupa has fashioned and
Now is the time to ripen.

At the base of the skull
release the butterfly,
metamorphosis complete.

Now you are free to fly away.

Just like an onion,

this tightly crafted poem works on many tasty layers that one can get all in one bite. The idea of metamorphosis as intentional work; the payoff for discipline and self control; finding beauty through heightened consciousness in the tiniest, most mundane things -- and inviting the reader to share in the epiphany at the closing line. There's some really nice alliteration in here, too, subtle enough that one doesn't realize it's working its magic. Very, very nice poem.
