It had the look
The curbside appeal
So I moved in.

Comfortable, solid, welcome

Most neighbors said hello,
Others just stalked
Through the slats of the blinds.

Suspicious, wary, judgmental

I labored quietly
And landscaped the spaces,
Carefully choosing the offerings

Cautious, anxious, eager

I displayed my soul,
Not knowing the offense,
Unaware of the history

Belittled, accused, persecuted

The curtains slammed closed,
Doors locked and barred,
Admittance withdrawn

Deserted, abandoned, forsaken

Outside, overgrown weeds,
Within darkness and gloom,
A self-imposed captive

Isolated, solitary, broken

Waiting to heal,
For reassurance and peace
Just wanting to belong

Hopeful, optimistic, alive
