Crushed my glass eye
So I could see
Burnt this wooden leg
Walk where I please
Cried my heart out
Then ate it
Her fingernails were made of
Bone
Why don’t other people
See that she’s not real
I’m where candle flames don’t burn
I’m where people took my turn
It’s better this way

Took the nettled path
Led to a quiet pool
Birds sang with voices of glass
Scratched against my skin
Drew tears of blood
Then they take me
The song that never ends
Stops
What is the sound of silence?
The answer is
Beyond the pale
To where the dead walk again
To where no-one’s tainted

It was too simple to understand
I realised
The thing that I am
Is merely who I choose
Looked at my hands
Saw that I had aged
Given a blanket sewn of
Skin
The symbols were etched with a quill
The man said
Knock on the tombstone
Enter the womb
To find
Us
