Cupid's Twisted Cuspid

she told me about how
it was uncanny that
his twisted and awkwardly protruding
telltale tooth (Cupid's twisted cuspid)
manifested the condition of their relationship;
how his tooth began its gross transformation
at exactly the same time
that she began to catalog her annoyances with him,
the tooth itself being one and all of them simultaneously.

she had asked him to get his tooth pulled;
he refused - she must have wanted to yank the deformity
right out of his skull (like something out of Poe)
thinking that the extraction might somehow solve everything;
but, instead, she decided to extract him from his tooth,
slowly, slowly, over seven years. The funeral was nice.
