A warm and drowsy summer afternoon.
While working in the garden I looked up
from hoeing carrot beds: perched on my spade
a robin looked at me inquiringly;
but for the rustling of the poplar leaves
and insects humming, not a single sound
disturbed the country's quiet, when a low
dark army jet came snarling down the sky.
The robin left its perch and flitted off
and all my half-thoughts left me – I looked up
and cursing underneath my breath I tried
to readjust my ears to those small sounds
civilization for a moment drowned.
