FUTURES 700101

By JCSTREET ©

Where were you when
the night went out
leaving New Liskeard a
swath of fire
spronged like a steak on the pines

Dawn swooped out of the swamp
cracked the frost on the ONR
skipped into high gear
blued a bit

Love and sleep swooned coffee-smoke
curled out of the galley
Timmins loomed
five percent copper
that whole town’s worth 3 1/2 cents a pound

MORE FUTURES 700101

Years ago the Shield
spat out the posturings of towns
the land
hardly pregnant held
unformed hands
groping the trees
felling them now

substantial industry grows
of lake and tundra, iron rails
rupture the permafrost, driving
to James Bay

all is
artifice and trade
but still
Woman

Still
Woman still
fecund still
haunting
a grip on the senses

this is where voices go when you have ceased to hear them

this cold north
