While I watch you sleep
I count...

The throes of satisfaction between us,
The whispers piled softly on our pillows,
The moments left,
and the days apart.

I wonder if I’m in your dreams,
While I count,

The rapid movements of your eyes under heavy lids,
The days of my life spent dreaming of moments like this,
Countless caresses,
One perfect union.

I sketch with my eyes this moment that’s mine,
And I count,

The slow steady breaths you take,
The promises our bodies have made,
Your claims,
My cries.

I gaze at your languid body while
I count the times you’ve made me smile,
And I sleep.
