Within the heart
sits a candle of love
inner most feelings
burns true expression.
For whom are they for?
Pumping life into you
this candle flames
but wants expression
to another.
Fie, fie on you
for when the mouth opens
"I . . ."
the wind of failed metaphor
enters down the throat
to the heart
blows out the flame
and I fall short
the feelings I have for you.
Inexpressible is love,
but unrenounced is it too.
For words alone cannot explain
the grip love holds on me
how it yearns to be expressed
to one who cares.
Not a word,
a phrase
a ditty or two,
not even a poem
although it tries,
can approach your meaning.
Through all junctures of the day
the heart holds true to love
in mind and body.
Does not let go.

Free me, free me! Oh unkind love!
Oh lord of the heart, what is your bidding?
For pain and sorrow come only to me
who has tried to serve you.
Like a chasm at my feet
impossible to cross
to fathom
to please
to express.
Oh cruel love
let me speak of you.
