When I fall in love
It will be spectacularly:
Crashing like cymbals
Hitting the hard-tack floor
Of a rhythm that is known
Only to itself and to none more.

When I do fall
In love it will be
With injuries and scars
And feathers and tar
And all the laughter
Of an unkind world.

These thoughts come to mind
After the fact. The first fact.

The second fact is that
I don't fall in love.
Rather, that love
Falls into me
Soundlessly as a whisper
From the other side of God's face
But no less meaningful
Or fraught with words
That have come to be.

Love fell into me
And there were no crashes
Or banged knees
Or cicatrixes after.

It sneaked up on me
And caught me just as
I was setting my heart free.
Then I knew that freedom
Was not what I thought it would be.
