It's a small concrete building
Surrounded by chainlink fencing,
Watched over by surveillance cameras.
It's at the end of a dirt road.
All around spreads a tangled boggy wood.
On my walk, I passed a gate
And numerous "No Trespassing" signs.
This is not a town
That opens its heart to just anyone.
If you've not lived here all your life,
You'll never belong.
I sit on a rock and look at it.
I hear your words in its steady hum.
It has a voice, but I have none.
This is the well that's featured on the town website.
It's soon gonna fail
And leave us all parched.
I'm in no hurry to move on.
My house's an empty shell
Since you've been gone.
