The night long nights
Come forward to robe us
Together over all this time
The air between us charged
Electric as thunderstorms
A westward wind blows across your skin
An eastern wisdom comforts me
A river divides us
Mountains rise up great plains fall
Our voices carry
Carry so much above it all

Explorers we
See the sights of this bright night
Seek you shelter in mine
And I in yours
I hold you in my heart
For it is here I keep you warm
Safe snug and joined
Furlined and nested
Lodged as beavers
We also build to hold back
The ever rushing current
Of time and tide
With sticks and twigs
Shaped by our mouths
Placed together
Side by side by side
Long as it is long enough
Wide as it is wide

I strain to reach
To ease your strains
I hurt to yearn
To smooth your pains
I hold my breathe
To hold your words
To me

I look eastward
To the rising sun
Eager to see your shadow
Cast long and low
Reaching toward me
