Big bird on high, carry me nigh, before I die
Standing guard at night and watching the big planes
Diving in and out of Tango Sierra Nevada air base
A person could tell it was the world’s busiest airfield in the world
The big birds carried men in and out and while a few wanted in
The rest of us just wanted out
What I wouldn’t give to be on that one, flying home
Away from this war, away from this hell, free at last
No more army, no more death
But you don’t watch the birds for long, you keep alert for Charlie
Back three weeks ago, I got the guard with this guy
He had ten days to go
He watched the big planes dive in and out, and while he was watching
Charlie slipped up and cut his throat
I killed Charlie, three rounds in the chest.
But Joe was dead
So you don’t watch the planes for long cause you can die from it
Nobody wants to go home in a bag,
Everyone wants to hop on one of those big birds
Big bird on high, carry me nigh, before I die
I remember such a bird myself. Different time different place. In some way all wars hit a similar cord. You; your life; your death? Your friends. The birds.
Sorry about your memories of time past. I was there. I know what it means. I could see it in your submission. Nonetheless, despite what it meant to you the actual poem was only so-so. People will rally to support you. As they should. But that does not make it poetry.
Spent four years on and off the coast of 'Nam so I didn't have to put up with the horror, Just the bullshit, boredom, long days of naval gunfire support, and plane guarding the carriers. Your poem is well spoken and with feeling. Ronnie W.
