This started out as An Airman then A Soldier but finally became...

Forgotten young men forever changed (ALL declared or undeclared WAR veterans)

The Military individual is one who has written a blank check up to and including his own life to defend yours. This we called HONOR.

We went off to war when you told us to without any hesitation.
We stood so tall in ranks on 10 and always at attention.

We went where we were told to go but not without some fear,
We stood our ground when it shook with explosions both far and near.

We dug in deep and yes we weep;
When friends or comrades went to their final sleep.

We gathered them up as best we could so as not leave them here;
We sent them home to their loved ones with one of us always near.

To you my friend your final journey, will not to be made alone;
For one of us your comrades in arms, will take this walk with you.

So my friend I choose go with you,
On this your final walk to see this finally thru.

For in your life you stood by so brave,
But now you'll rest in a cold and lonely grave.

You'll never be forgotten nor lack for any friends,
My comrade in arms, my friend to the end.

My tears will be shed, my anger unleashed, to you who said "That was such a waste."
But let it be known by all far and near that YOU sent us to war without haste.

Remember when we finally returned home again,
YOU spit on us and said we had sinned.

YOU hurled at us your worst insults that you could think,
You said we were baby killers and threw at us all that would stink.

You claim to be Christian and civilized too
But at the funeral parade with honors accorded
by family, comrades and friends you showed to true.

And at our family’s worst time in their lives,
YOU picketed and paraded and hurled your lies.

Remember this now and as it still holds so true,
Remember us well for this was done for you.

We did not run we stood out ground.
So you could stay home so warm and sound.

You have taken the FLAG our nation’s proud symbol.

You’ve burned it and stomped on it then watched as we turn purple with rage.

We were restrained by our friends both dead and alive ALWAYS remembering...

We went off to war when you ordered us to without any hesitation.
We stood so tall in ranks on 10 and always at attention.

The Military individual is one who has written a blank check up to and including his own life to defend yours. This we called HONOR.

Thanks for allowing me to ramble on again.

THANK YOU!

Not all of us spit on those who serve When you stand for the colors many of us will proudly stand with you. All honor to those who lay their lives on the alter of freedom.

God bless you and your comrades

Thank you for your comments/critique. Remember to fully understand you must see thru my eyes, feel ith my heart and finally walk with me a mile in my shoes.

I am not a professional writer or poet, just a tired old man who has seen much to much hurt from both sides of this street called reality orlife releasing some of his resentment in a calm cadience.

This was originally started after being involved in the Six Day War (yes I was there and this was my first taste of war), followed quickly by Vietnam tours thru the Grenada Rescue Effort and other named and unnamed political unrests up to 10 years after I retired.

I retired mainly for two reasons the first one everyone working with me at that time referred to me as Grandpa (which I took as a compliment since those I worked for and those who worked under me were younger than my own children) and secondly I did not want to be that lone individual standing at that cold lonely grave of one more friend, co-worker, brother or sister in arms again. But please remember a heart no matter how hardened it is thru life or life’s situations or you steel yourself; can only torn apart with grief so many times without breaking for the final time since...

We went off to war when you ordered us to without any hesitation.

We stood so tall in ranks on 10 and always at attention.

The Military individual is one who has written a blank check up to and including his own life to defend yours. This we call HONOR.

The sentiment is good (although cliched in parts) but the poem itself could do with some editing, there are several typos, some are rhyming couplets some aren't which made me stumble in the reading. Think there is a word missing here .... 'So my friend I choose go with you'
