Serving wenches, seated benches
Mulled mead flowing, voices crowing
Logs ablazing, tankards raising
All around the merriment flows

Swirling skirts, beer stained shirts
Hands in quest, of an open breast
Raucous laughter to reach the rafter
Sackbut lute and viol bows

Painted faces, hot embraces
Heaping platters, greasy spatters
Happy vulgarity, and lewd hilarity
Disorder and wantoness in their clothes

A swirl of cloak parts the smoke
The masters here, and all revere
Benovolent sire whom all admire
Grace and favour on all he bestows

Hand to the bride, they turn aside
Ancient tradition, glad recognition
Mounting the stairs, all eyes upon theirs
One night to remember she knows

Droit de seigneur
