I went outside today
And you were there
Just passing by
You didn't wave or say hello
Head down
Hands in your pockets
You just kept
Trudging I guess is the word
In your designer jeans
Designer coat
Even a designer hat
With a cool label on the front
And I wondered
What was up with you
To make you pass by so
Despairingly

Maybe
You found your wife
With another man
Your best friend in your bed
They shouted at you
To get out
As though you
Were the bad guy

Maybe
You just were told
Of Third stage cancer
You thought the test was
Unnecessary

Maybe
Your dog died
You lost your job
Your house foreclosed
Your car was stolen

And then, I looked down
At my faded Levi's
Gardening gloves
Thought of my plain knit cap
Bought for two dollars
Off the clearance rack
I thought
Maybe I just wasn't
Cool enough
For you to say hello
Lift your head
Smile, wave
Maybe you were just a
Snob
