Speed-bumps on a Gravel Road

My house is on a gravel road
and as each car goes by
there follows such a cloud of dust
it almost makes me cry

I called the man who keeps the road
to ask what might be done
he said he could pave the road
but that would cost a ton

He said that he would think a while
and come up with a plan
but that would cost more money
for a gravel fixing man

And so they bought more gravel
and dumped it here and there
the drivers has to zig and zag
and some began to swear

And so the traffic slowed way down
almost to a crawl
There were no more clouds of dust
but it started quite a brawl

The ziggers and the zaggers
just could not agree
on where to zig and where to zag
so they started blaming me

They asked me why I did complain
about the dusty air
It would be so simple
if you just move out of there

It is not my fault, I said
for it was not my plan
I'm not the one who chose to hire
that gravel fixing man

And so the man that keeps the road
smoothed out all the lumps
he moved the gravel into rows
and created the speed-bumps

All the traffic still moved slow
but noone seemed to care
The dusty clouds forever gone
replaced by nice clean air

When I was young
my life was like a brand new interstate
divided, paved, and oh so smooth
The driving then was great

But over time, there seemed to be
more traffic in the way
but that was not so bad, I thought
there's nothing much to say

But then the interstate was closed
I took another road
The traffic there was slower
we each had a heavy load

As life went on, some holes appeared
the road was getting bad
Each one I hit.. it jarred my bones
and I was getting sad

The pavement soon was gone
the road now dirt and gravel
no longer smooth and easy
it was getting hard to travel

Now as I look up ahead
it's hard to find my way
each mile a little harder
new challenges each day

I feel that I might lose my way
it's getting dark and cold
so hard to see the road ahead
I'm feeling very old

I need someone to light the way
until I see the end
I can complete life's journey
with the help of my dear friend
