The Boxer

Denouncing any scorners by unanimous victory,
Announcing in this corner the winner by decree,
Another night, another bum, another fight for purse,
Alone stands the boxer, is he happy or cursed?

Proving himself every time he steps in the ring,
Hoping for the bell and relieved when it dings,
After each round, his confidence swells,
How tired are the fighters? The referee can tell.

Jabs, counters, combinations, and parries,
Through muscled shoulders each fist carries,
Enough power to knockout the opponent.
Many believe boxing too violent.

Jeers and cheers meld in raucous roar,
Every fan roots for their fighter to score,
One last punch to knock him out,
To end the round and end the bout,

After the fights are over and the bodies recovered,
Those that have fought and lost discover,
Few fighters make it. They surrender,
Too bad, they could have been contenders.
