Hearing the call*
of a silent raven
in the dark of night
the cry cuts through the air
without a sound

See moonlight fall
on the pond's still surface
piercing its cool depths
not touching the water
leaving no trace

Bamboo shadows
sweep across the courtyard
running up the stairs
no mote of dust is stirred
by their passage

* the first three lines are from a koan by Zen master Hakuin
