As he shrieked, she picked up his holy book and handed it to a woman there, telling her that they needed no minister to guide them. They only needed to be able to read, and they could guide themselves. The woman stared at Monnie who nodded, saying, "You read this and think. If you've got a brain at all, you'll see just how much cowshit he's poured into your ears. Most of what he's told you isn't even in here at all."

That had been months ago. Today she sat on the bench of her coach and pulled back on the reins to stop her horses at the crest of the ridge as she contemplated the vista below her. Monnie was about to stare thirty years of age in the face and she used the moment to take stock.

She never gave it a thought, but though she was all alone in the world, she was independent. She might not be everyone's cup of tea and she never thought of herself as remotely pretty, but she was striking in her appearance at just over six feet of solid farm-bred and built muscle, covered as she was in her slightly greenish skin and all topped off with her now deep red hair. She might not ever have a man again, and the predicted "drying-up' of her ovaries had happened just as her grandmother had foretold, but Monnie didn't carry one wrinkle or grey hair. Like anyone, she had no idea how much time she had on Earth and living on the road as she did brought her a few more uncertainties, after all.

Still, she smirked a little; life could be a strange thing. Here she was looking down on the miles of the ruin of what had once been a great city, it was said. Now it was home to the ghosts of its inhabitants and they outnumbered the living here by many to one.

Lozenjellis, it had been called.

That was about all that she knew of it, other than knowing two more things.

The man who caused the demons to appear in places everywhere came here sometimes.

Monnie Aldergrove had come here to kill him.

Warning, unfinished story

Just thought I would put up this warning at the end of Chapter 1 for anyone like me who started reading this wonderful saga a few weeks ago.

I got to the "final" chapter only to find that this was left unfinished just as the final plot elements were being put in place. It seems that a reader here had set up a link elsewhere allowing folks to download the story as an ebook, which was a clear copyright infringement. This is the second series of this author I've read, and sadly both are unfinished.

I wish that TaLtos6 had set up a Patreon account allowing readers to support this body of work. I would have gladly contributed.

Now, to take a careful look at the other series to see if any of them were completed...

Enjoyable beginning to a literary tapestry

Your writing style reminds me a lot of David Drake, of Hammer's Slammers fame. The best way I can think of to describe your writing is many separate, yet striking in their own way, threads weaving an amazing tapestry of a tale as large as the world it encompasses. I look forward to discovering how the threads weave together. Thank you for sharing your gift of tale weaving.

3rd Time Around

I have started over three times with this set. Each time I find something I missed before. Please, if you change venues, let me know where to find your work. I have loved everything you have written. I look forward to reading them to M'Mahal when we finally settle down in the physical world togeather. An ocean between us and we share your words as our dates. To see M'Mahals face as I read them aloud is a fond dream. I hope this story is concluded by then.

With Love and Respect

Good to see you posting if only in the comments taltos6

I liked your stories enough the first time that I am going back and reading all your stories again. I must admit that I miss seeing your name in the list of new works. I hope life is treating you well. If you are using another site, it would be good to know where that is if possible. Thanks for sharing the stories you posted here.

@Imper1al

A hint: The world is Earth after some apocalyptic events. Not much works anymore, so people have had to go back to farming to stay alive. That doesn't mean that the rest of the universe has stopped. The "space marines" that you mention are from another world. They're often mercenaries and the vignette that you read involves a few of them working at an outpost on Earth which is operated by another off-world civilization. The Xer man the outpost handling security and are there under contract. Shaevre is arriving to take up her contracted stay there. She gets noticed because she's attractive and more interestingly to the shuttle crew, she's obviously ex-military. Arrax knows her war record and if the rest of the Xer knew what he knew, they'd be even more polite to her. She's a stone-cold war hero with a long record. But that comes out in the story later. ;)

Confused

What is going on here? I can't get through this because there is no context for the characters, and I don'tknow anything about the world this is set in. At the start, you say that the world has devolved into an agrarian society, but then one page later the featured character is some kind of space Marines flying around the world? This doesn't make any sense.

To the disappointed anonymous commenter...

He said this was a prologue. A way to set this up for a long series where he would be moving from character to character. So you're disappointed by his setting up all those various plot threads? Really? Sure it's a bit disjointed, but I adore this prologue. It got me hooked on the story when I first read it, and it hooked me again this time.
