Your counselor sent you here because she knew this was the perfect place to learn and to find peace. Chef Mike hired you because you were good.

My wife saw you as a loving couple before you were a loving couple. We are going to finance your wedding not because you need it but because we want to. All you and Doris need to do is listen to the redhead. Any questions?"

Larry was too overwhelmed to ask any and shook his head no and looked into the house. Several people had walked in and he worried about Doris.

"Relax, they will send for us eventually. I have heard you are obsessed with making sauces."

Larry breathed a bit easier; they were in his playing field.

"Yes, sir. I am trying to find the perfect sauce for each of everything. I am trying to convince Doris that there is a perfect sauce for each seafood and everything does not need to be deep fried."

"Are you making any headway with that?"

"Some. I have fixed some sauces for the fish we catch that she has enjoyed."

"We saw the two of you trying to corral big redfish in the lagoon from kayaks. You lost yours but she got hers. I take it they were too big to keep."

"Yes sir, by a lot. Mine did his own self release and she would not let go of that for the rest of the day even though it was me that caught supper."

Adrian laughed and said, "Women are like that. But you know they love you and are very happy you are there with them for their triumphs.

Appreciate their victories and ignore their failures. Praise the attempts. And she does remember you caught dinner."

Larry was obviously taking in every word he was hearing.

"Do you know sign language?"

"Some, the chef strongly suggested we take the classes at the high school so we did. She is much better at it than I am."

"Yes, I see she is very good."

Larry looked towards the window and saw Doris laughing at something one of the newly arrived guests was signing. He saw that everyone in the room was laughing, all knew sign language. He decided to work on it a bit harder.

"It just takes practice, you will get better. Ask Doris to tell you that story. It is funny."

Doris came out and said, "Larry, we are going to Pedro's."

The man shook Larry's hand and said to him, "If you need someone to talk to I will find the time."

As Larry walked out he thought that maybe he at last had a father figure to look up to. That though was interrupted when their chef and Wendy kissed him on the lips.

As they got in her Corolla both had tears in their eyes, and big smiles on their lips.

At Pedro's Larry and Doris found themselves in good company eating good food and having a good time with people that could not have possibly cared that they existed yet did. All were around their age.

None was wearing a mask or copping an attitude or enhancing themselves. Their new best friends were real.

And most importantly to Larry, they loved Doris.

The blonde and the brunette were a committed couple; they had identical and unique wedding bands. The brunette was Petra, Adrian's vice president in their office.

The blonde was named Sally and had been on their line when they were first hired.

She had threatened to kill them both if they disappointed the chef yet defended their mistakes to her. They looked up to her. They were very happy they could be her friends.

The Hispanic girl was Marissa, the chef's daughter and the assistant manager of the large bay restaurant. They had met her at Jana's dance club and the club across the street.

The deaf girl was Janie, the owner and chef of her fast food restaurant and the daughter of one their big bosses. They went to her place for food often.

Once their chef had asked him to hurry and get cumin powder to her, she had spilled hers and needed some immediately. Janie had kissed his cheek when he handed her a pint jar full. When he returned the chef had patted his back.

Janie's husband was the manager of the banquet and convention rooms at the resort. They had worked banquets for him. He was a good guy and obviously adored Janie. He was home with their daughter.

A girl called Holly was there with them with her husband Marshall, she worked for Adrian with Petra.

They started singing the Kill the Rabbit opera that everyone knew. Marshall and Larry sang the Elmer part.

That night in bed Larry and Doris spend several minutes laughing and crying before falling asleep in each other's arms.

There was no sex that night.

Six weeks later, on the morning that started Labor Day weekend, their wedding was exactly the one Doris had dreamed of but never expected to come true.

The blonde, Sally, was the maid of honor and Janie, Marissa, Holly and Petra were the bridesmaids.

His best man was the Chef's husband, Adrian.

Their chef, Martina was the matron of honor.

Those two became the mother and father they had never had.

Martina and Adrian were already Sally's parents and Adrian was Petra's dad so they easily accepted their new children.

Both called Martina Mom everywhere except at work, Doris called Adrian Dad everywhere. Larry called him Sir, the only man he had called sir that he had not been forced to do so.

Doris and Larry were suddenly part of a large and loving family.

After they returned from their honeymoon in Las Vegas they wondered what had happened to their former lovers. They had not responded to the wedding invitations and in fact had not seen them since they had moved out of the apartments.

Both waited on tables for a living although neither was all that reliable.

They never heard anything that would have sent them back to jail. They had just simply left; rumors had it they went west.

They never found Andy and Rita.

Larry and Doris were offered kitchens of their own but turned them down. Both loved their chef and both got to run the kitchen at times. Both were now in charge of meeting the boats and buying the seafood for the restaurant. Larry was particularly good at getting good stuff at a good price.

Martina bragged about them, her children.

A few months later an Indian restaurant with little clientele closed and Adrian bought it.

He invited Larry and Doris to cook dinner for the whole family at his house. This had happened before and they loved showing off to their family and friends just as Sally did with her birthday cakes for everyone.

Holly and Marshall, Petra and Sally, Janie and Bart and their daughter Ruth, Helen and Roger and their son AR, Leigh and Corey and her twins, Paloma and Wendy, sixteen people in all were dining that night.

The dinner was fabulous and Adrian was impressed by how well they worked together, and by the high number of kisses exchanged.

After dinner Adrian gathered the family in the living room and noticed Sally holding Doris' hand. "She knows, she remembers," he thought.

Adrian told Doris and Larry about the Indian restaurants demise then said, "Turn it into anything you want but I think a seafood restaurant would be good there. Something that serves fried catfish and grilled swordfish with sauce. Someplace that knows how to make seafood soup and cook an eel. A place where someone would enjoy assorted sea creatures empanadillas and fish and chips"

Doris cried and kissed Adrian and Martina over and over; Larry shook Adrian's hand then hugged him, then shook his hand again. Sally had tears in her eyes. Holly gave Doris a full lip kiss and so did everyone else, even Adrian.

Larry got full lip kisses from everyone and a cheek kiss from Marshall, his first best friend.

As the commotion died down a loud exclamation mark was added when Leigh's twins asked for more fish.

The next morning they met with Adrian's lawyer Clara and drew up the papers. Petra and Holly were there as witnesses.

As soon as everything was signed Martina told both of them, "You are now fired," and handed them the keys to the restaurant. After another intense round of kisses that even included Clara, Martina accompanied them to their new restaurant.

They decide to call the place A & M's Seafood Place.

They had people waiting line to get in two weeks after it opened. They paid Adrian back before three years had elapsed.

Everyone loved Larry and Doris. Many young ladies loved Doris. Doris was invited to an all girl party at a friend's swimming pool. Doris got to eat pussy again.

Larry was happy about that when he learned of the events side effects.

Five years later neither could remember their lives before Felicity. That was a good thing. And they never lied to each other or others.

My opinion

What I like about this story is that is a thoughtful, well-written paean to the Human Spirit. That if you have the strength of character to persevere, adversity can be overcome. If you do not give up on people, they can surprise you with becoming better people.
