Gail smiled and tried not to say anything derogatory about her mother, but knew he would discover more about her if he hired her. "I have a name recognition problem too. My mother is a major real estate broker in town. Mister Abrams said many of the other brokers in town would take their business elsewhere if they knew her daughter worked in the main office. I know Realtors are pretty competitive. Although she and I are not close, I thought I'd find another town, where she isn't as well known."
Atwood nodded, "Unfortunately he does have a point. They can be so secretive sometimes, and they do make our job difficult, too. But I must admit, I'd go broke if they didn't bring business in my front door. So, tell me your license is current, your surety bond is good, and when you can start. I don't dare let you out that door. Someone else would grab you and I'd never get that office next door opened."

Atwood threw his head back and roared with laughter. Gail couldn't help but smile and laugh a little herself. He finally stopped long enough to say, "Damn, I got me a Texas Land Title Association licensed escrow officer and she wasn't even looking for a job."

rphinneyabout 13 years agoHoward goes on and on about living on the border, how dangerous it is, and portrays himself as someone struggling with a bad situation. But, he isn't struggling, he's already surrendered, and just lets everyone walk all over him. Why is Gail interested in him when he has already demonstrated himself to be a big baby that is at the mercy of everyone else in the world?
He would have been run off the place long before she showed up if he was really as the author portrays him in this story, hence my suspension of disbelief fails, and thus the story fails.

renaissancequeenalmost 15 years agoso nice to see the character development and that Gail is starting to see that her life can have value. nicely written, from Howard asking her to write him a letter to the confrontation with Santos was timely considering her epiphany after writing the letter.
digdaddyrichalmost 15 years agoIt's like I just get interested in what's going on and the chapter ends. What I read is very good and keeps my interest and attention,and the story is very real in my mind, but then I have to wait until the next part is posted on the network. It's just like listening to my favorite hero on Radio when I was a kid, Just when it started to get good, the announcer would say, "until next week." The story is stretching out for too long of a time period, and that it makes my poor old simple mind work hard to try and remember the past chapters. Hell I have a hard time remembering what I had for dinner last night,although I still remember the last woman I was with, so the old grey matter isn't all of the way dead yet. It might just be me, but I would like to see a 4 part chapter to get the story moving on at a good pace, and I'm still waiting for Howard to nail Gail and show that sexy little girl just what she has been missing. I think Ms. Widder needs to put down her pen and pick up that hot torch and write some hot sweaty sticky sex, where the goo is running down the crack of her ass, and the sweat is dripping from his forehead and falling on her tits. It's Texas,for mercy sakes, there's a lot of hot sweaty sex going on all of the time. Thanks Ms. Widder for the good chapter.........Rich
PennLadyalmost 15 years agoGood for Gail for standing up to Aguirre, and finding the job. I like that this chapter was a little lighter than the others. Eye of the storm and all that. :)
