tomorrow you will rise
and head off to work
as usual
Your shoes sitting square
side by side
in front of the chair
upon which your shirt
and pants drape folded
and ready
for you to wear
That is no guarantee
The bowls
sitting upon the cabinet shelf
waiting to hold your cereal
are just as happy
left empty and undisturbed
Perhaps your car is weary
and bored
of the daily back and forth
you demand of it
You think only of yourself
and that
as little as possible
your life
as uniform and starched as your clothes
as empty as the bowl
as weary and bored as your car
Why would you want to think that?
Personifying the bowls, cups, etc. I think this is more about the daily grind then whether the cups are full or empty. Reminds me of that wonderful Beatles song Eleanor Rigby. Ah, look at all the lonely people!
This is a thinking poem. I'll say it shows us what happens
when the work week controls you. Just enough here to get
you thinking about your life and not the poem. That is a good thing.
Well written and it has me thinking.
I read this stanza several times. It's really excellent:
The bowls
sitting upon the cabinet shelf
waiting to hold your cereal
are just as happy
left empty and undisturbed
I would be tempted to change one or both "upon" to "on".
