Lakota chief's "orders?" Being disobeyed? Means death?

That is not the way their society was structured. Grown men did not take "orders" from a chief. He was a "man of influence" only. After much discussion during which any warrior could speak a consciousness was reached by all, most or some. Those who did not agree were Not bound to that decision. No orders were involved in tribal affairs. War bands did have leaders whose instructions were followed because they were considered wise. No "on pain of death" was involved. Artistic license for story plot is getting thin here.
