There was more than just the statue and bad memories from high school. Ruthie had always wanted to do something that would shock and offend her mother's friends and her former classmates, an act of defiance that would obliterate whatever remaining ties she had to Salinas.
Given the conservative beliefs of a lot of the people she had known growing up, she knew that doing a nude photo-shoot at the county's most famous landmark would cause a big scandal. A scandal was precisely what she wanted.
Ruthie severely went off-script. Among the few items of clothing she had taken with her was an old t-shirt her mother had bought at a discount store in high school. It had a big logo of an artichoke on it. She put it on and posed in front of the artichoke statue.
