The tanka is a thirty-one-syllable poem, traditionally written in a single unbroken line.

A form of waka, Japanese song or verse, tanka translates as "short song," and is better known in its five-line, 5/7/5/7/7 syllable count form

*****

The joys of being a writer

Staring at the screen / Feeling words roll around my head / Yet the screen still blank / But the words rage like a storm / Waiting to burst free and live

*****

A heron hunts

It waits in silence / Poised ready to strike its prey / Death its final gift / It kills just to feed its young / The cycle of life goes on.
