You never could admit your heart's intent,
Or speak the three small words I longed to hear.
Though "sweetness" sweetly hinted what you meant
The limits of your bravery were clear.
Perhaps my heart was too uncritical;
Perhaps my error was to simply trust.
It's cheap enough to call me beautiful
And give me, for my diamonds, only rust.
But I am selfish; this much I confess,
I cannot wish you swift to joy again
For though I know you loved me so much less
To know you loved at all would ease my pain
Your caution breeds a cautionary tale;
A love that's unreturned will always fail.

So glad you decided to publish this and share it with the world. It’s hauntingly beautiful but, at the same time, disturbingly sad. Despite our wishes, our love is often destined to be unrequited, but, to the one who took the risk and loved, that knowledge doesn’t make it hurt any less. Beautifully done, 5*.
