Traveling home
the Prodigal Son
out in the bright
dry desert sun,
Alone on the road
Route Sixty-six
hoping for
an afternoon fix,

The Prodigal Girl
in a flat-bed Ford
stopped and said
not a word,
Opened the door
and I climbed in
given a chance
I’d do it again,

Drove awhile
then stopped at a court
“as far as I’m goin’”
was her report,
Next to the Court
a swimming pool
the air hot
the water cool,

Emerged from the side
in swimming attire
thin, see-through
someone to admire,
Two cold beers from
her Coleman cooler
no way in hell
I could fool her,

In boxer shorts
I dove in
the cool water
tingled my skin,
She swam lengths
I treaded water
could have been colder
might have been hotter,

Two old lawn chairs
both faded blue
she told me what
she’d like me to do,
That’s what I did
no chore at all
from neck to ankles
I covered her all,

The sun then set
in the west, as it does
the air got cool
just because,
Thermodynamic
laws apply
stars slowly
filled the sky,

By then we were dry
put back on our clothes
“you’ll spend the night?
she said, “I suppose”,
“Is that an offer?”
“yes, indeed
you have something
I might need,”

The room was small
the bed was hard
the shower tiny
a menu card,
From the restaurant
across the way
“free delivery
night and day,”

Two more beers
and Chinese food
on the bed
in the mood,
She told me the rules
she told me the plan
all of the worms
came out of the can…
