A beach in winter
is expected to be empty;
with bone-chilling breezes
churning under a grey horizon.
No one hides from the sun
beneath tilted umbrellas
when the footprints are few
on snow-covered sand.

The beach is a lonely locale
in the brutality of February,
holding the souls of those
who walk it hostage in its grip,
finding themselves in submission
to the solitude of the ocean.
