a quiet night,
an empty yard,
security has fallen off
but the only thing on
my mind is
the spillled bowls and
lingering paw prints
reminding me of
golden locks gone
matted and muddy,
and of slow, labored
breaths
that still tried to
power challenges and hellos
that turned out to be
goodbyes,
making my eyes water
and my chest ache
at the unexpected discovery
that he was my dog too.

my first dog

was named Apache, a huge black and tan dobie. I loved him so much and he loved n one but me, and I was a teeny child. Someone shot him, but he made it home to say goodbye.

beautiful poem, Remec.

a special bond

only a dog has that special bond -- unlike any other creature. A four-legged child. Emily

Unlike a cat, a dog is like a child, a true family member and its loss is especially telling.

This was a touching tribute...

to a well loved, and now lost, part of your family. I don't know how I will ever handle losing Serenity {My dog} someday, but your poem made Me realize it will happen, and to enjoy her now so I have the good memories to hold onto when she is gone. Thank you for sharing your memories with Me tonight.

the title....

at first glance certainly didn't remind me of a pet. when one expects one thing and then is presented with another, it makes it very effective.....great work.......!!!.....don

bows head~

I felt the tear from here, sorry my friend! They come into our lives and earn the stripes of family and bond with the heart. A cycle complete that leaves a mountain of memories and pain deep. Bows humble amigo~ The winds of change forever constant~ The leaves leave one at a time till the family tree is bare~
