In each child's room, there is a toy
unwanted and alone.
Used only when there's nothing else
he watches from his home.

High upon an unused shelf.
forgotten, but filled with love.
He watches undeserving toys
spun around and held above.

I wonder what that toy would say
If only he could speak.
would he talk of love and pride
or neglect and feeling weak.

Would the pain of plain indifference
be first words he would say.
would it be the empty hollow heart
as he watches, day by day.

Would he tell her that the other toys
do not deserve her love.
that he sees the bigger picture
from his lonely home above.

Does her remind of when that one toy hid
and another cut her deep?
or about the one who ran away
that all have cost her sleep.

Would he tell of her of his jealous heart?
or how he longs to be
The one that she first comes to find
the first her eyes must see?

Would he tell her of his loneliness
of his solitude and pain?
that he lives and breathes in desperate hope
that she'll play with him again.

Would he tell her that he asks himself
If mom would clear that shelf,
if she would notice or even care
if she lost her little elf?

Or would he be more gracious
and tell her of his pride?
of watching her live her life so well
even if hes not by her side.

Would he tell her that her sing-song voice
is what gets him through the day?
That he loves her spirt, he loves her soul
more than any elf could say.

That he misses her so deeply,
when the others get her time.
that the anchor he was so long ago
another says is mine.

Would he smile and change the subject
pretend that nothing's wrong?
would he let her share her hopes and dreams
just to talk with her alone?

Would he tell her that his deepest fear
may soon come to pass.
when mom decides that toys unused
will be thrown in the trash.

That he will not get to see her face
when she notices he is gone
That she had his heart, his time, his love
that she had them all along.

He doesnt want devotion,
he knows that isn't fair
He can't make desire or love
just appear when they're not there

But to have a sense of value
to be wanted in return.
It was all that he ever wanted
as his little world did turn.

So he sits and he says nothing
smiling at her joy.
he cries her tears, he feels her pain
cos he'll always be her toy.

The gods be good, she'll look up soon
and he will still be there
his smiling face, just beaming back
not going anywhere

Until that day, he'll wait alone
and watch her as she lives.
and if she ever wants his love
that's exactly what he'll give.

So girls and boys, remember well
to look up for your elf.
You'll never know what you might find
a toy, a friend, a vacant shelf.

Beautifully written. You can feel the pain and loneliness, but also the selfless love there, too.

One hundred stars and one very tearful heart.

Simply beautiful innocent first love, and yet the tragedy of loss for that staying behind moves forward captured in ageless epic words.
