With apologies to songwriter Sharon Vaughn, for this parody of her classic.

I grew up dreaming
Of being a skipper
And loving the coaching ways

Pursuing the life
Of my potbellied heroes
I burned up my child rearing days

I learned all the rules
Of the sidelines conductor
Don't you hang on to game plans too long

Just take what you need
From your starters then leave them
With the words of a bench warmer's song

My heroes have always been coaches
And they still are it seems
Sadly in search of
And one step in back of
Themselves
And their slow moving dreams

Coaches are special
With their own brand of misery
From being behind too long

You could die from the cold
In the arms of a nightmare
Knowing well
That your best player's gone

Looking at game films
Instead of my pride
I watch the days of my youth fade away
Old worn-out playbooks, and old worn-out memories
With no team
And no place to play

My heroes have always been coaches
And they still are it seems
Sadly in search of
And one step in back of
Themselves
And their slow moving dreams

Sadly in search of
And one step in back of
Themselves
And their slow moving dreams

Hall of Fame baseball coach died today at the age of 93. Baseball has lost another of it's most colorful coaches.
