Divorce is like the F-word,
the most powerful and indelible endeavor.
It transports you to another place,
where the memory lasts forever.

Divorce is like the F-word.
It takes your breath away.
It reaches to your very soul,
and leads your heart astray.

Divorce is like the F-word,
where there’s a before, a during, and after.
It changes how you view the world,
and makes you scream into the rafters.

Divorce is like the F-word.
Yes, it’s like a Funeral.
Where nothing is the same again
and everything is final.

This is the first poem I have read on this site. Very good.

Forced rhyme. Learned it in 10th grade English. Kiss of death to good poetry.

Been there, done that. Spot on.

An apt metaphor - or is it a simile? Never could keep them straight. Something about ‘is like’ as opposed to ‘as a’.

.

I think ‘F-word actually has more impact than the actual f-word. ‘The-word’ is often preceded by a slight pause, and often whispered, both affectations serving to give it heightened stress. The latter is bantered about casually as an expletive or mild oath, or as a modifying adjective, mildly offensive in public, but in most contexts, everyday common. Not entirely dissimilar to ‘The N-word’.

.

I think the word ‘Divorce’ and the actual act of divorcing now have that same dual meaning. In the not too distant past, the act was shameful and scandalous, and utterly destructive to anyone caught in its blast zone. Today, divorce is commonplace and expedient, but unfortunately still as devastating to those involved. Again, not too dissimilar from, say, abortion, expedient but traumatic.

You’ve given me pause for reflection, and a forum for a bit of my own rambling musings. Thanks for sharing your gift.
