As they began to cross the bridge the wind howled; roared the river;
The boards rattled one and all; swayed the trestle hither and thither.
He dug his heels and shot an arm towards the girl; his voice a whisper:
“Swiftly, baby girl! Take my hand lest you slip and fall over!”
With pleading eyes she stared at him, then shook her head to and fro;
“No, Daddy! You hold my hand,” her words implored in a mute echo.
“For I may trip and lose my grip in these storms of ebb and flow,
But come what may, I trust and pray, you will never let me go!”
